Kansas State University students Carmen Ellis and Adrian Carter had been friends for a year when she competed in and won his fraternity’s scholarship pageant.
“All of a sudden 600 people were watching Carmen display her intelligence and beauty,” Adrian remembers. “From that point on, I snatched her up before anybody else got the opportunity. I knew I needed to move fast because the competition was about to heat up.”
Three years later, they both earned graduate assistantships at Florida International University in Miami, where they work today.
“It was a no-brainer to have the wedding in Kansas because we wanted every person who has been an influence in our lives to be there,” Carmen says. “And I knew I wanted a fall wedding because being from Kansas and living in Florida makes you really miss the seasons.”
The couple scheduled back-to-back meetings with vendors during trips home and handled follow-up decisions for the wedding, which Carmen describes as “country glamour,” over the phone and email. Her vision worked perfectly with the Hawthorne House. “I automatically fell in love with it and couldn’t see the wedding being anywhere else.”
